Karen, Senior Counsel for Gamestop contacted me this summer after she found out that she was selected as a finalist for one of D Magazine’s annual awards.  Her headshot would be used at the awards banquet later in October.  She also would be using the image for her own personal use as well.

I arrived at her home in Dallas on a mild Saturday morning where I had the pleasure of meeting her husband while she gave me a quick tour of their home.  Because the weather was so nice, it made perfect sense to take a few outdoor shots in the backyard since their tall trees provided us with a good amount of shade.  Just as I was beginning to setup my equipment I noticed that a swarm of mosquitoes were enjoying the shade just as much as we were and I asked Karen to go ahead and step back inside until I got my equipment set up.  Thank heavens that I decided to wear pants, otherwise i would have been bumped up like Brobee from Yo Gabba Gabba.  (You’ll only know what I’m talking about if you have small children like I do).

I was finally ready to have Karen come outside and had to work double-time get some natural light shots in before she was eaten up too badly by our carnivorous insect friends.  Amazingly, during our brief time outside I took one of our best images before heading back inside to take a few traditional headshots and finish up with some environment portraits in their formal living area.

It’s always a pleasure to get to meet and spend some time talking with everyday people who are making their dreams come true.  It means a lot when people recognize your passion and hard work and become an advocate for you so much so as to nominate you for an award. So Karen, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your professional journey.  Good luck to you in all you do.

Oh yeah! Congratulations on becoming D Magazine’s Outstanding Up-And-Comer award recipient for 2015.   You can read about Karen’s accomplishment here.
